🍑 Veecot Apricot Tree

  • Botanical name
    • Prunus armeniaca ‘Veecot’
  • Origin
    • Canada, specifically developed at the Vineland Institute, Ontario.
  • Harvest period
    • Early to mid-August for most Canadian regions.
  • Use
    • Fresh consumption, canning, preserves (jams, etc.)

🌿 Characteristics of the fruit and tree

  • Fruit:
    • Color: Deep dark orange, often intense.
    • Flesh: Firm, juicy, freestone (the pit comes out easily).
    • Taste: Sweet, pleasant, good for eating fresh or canning.

  • Tree:
    • Vigor: Moderate, fairly healthy trees.
    • Pollination: Self-fertile (pollinates itself), but as with many apricot trees, cross-pollination with another variety can improve production.

❄️ Hardiness and climate

  • USDA hardiness zones: Approximately zones 4 to 9.
  • Special tolerances: The tree is fairly hardy, but remains vulnerable to certain problems depending on the year.
  • Risks: Bacterial spot can be a problem in some years.

Strengths

  • Excellent deep color, visually appealing fruit.
  • Good flavor for fresh consumption and canning.
  • Fruit stays on the tree well when ripe (if not picked too early).
  • Overall tree health rated “excellent” in several descriptions.

⚠️ Limitations/challenges

  • Susceptibility to bacterial spot in some years. May require care or choice of drier sites, or fungicide management.
  • Fruit must be picked at optimal ripeness: the intense color may encourage picking too early or too late, which reduces taste or texture.
  • Like many apricot trees, vulnerable to spring frosts if flowering early in some regions

Hardiness Zones

  • 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a
