The zelkova serrata is a tree native to Japan with a sparse, semi-open crown which is very resistant to cold. It is said to be hardy up to zone 3a. It is classified in the elm family and is therefore a close relative of this species. It grows up to 25 meters tall in optimal growing conditions. The bark is generally low branched, with several sturdy main branches. The trunk is initially smooth with pink to orange-red lenticels. It then exfoliates in patches, causing the underbark to appear orange-brown. The young branches are green and pubescent, they then become glabrous and red-brown in color. The leaf, oval to oblong in shape, is light green and turns reddish bronze and orange-yellow in autumn. The tip is acuminate, and the outline of the blade has a unique regular toothing. Zelkova has a discreet flowering followed by small kidney-shaped fruits. The tree is from the elm family (Ulmus), with the difference that it has unisexual flowers, while those of the elm are bisexual. Elm fruits are dry and winged, Zelkova has stone fruits. The Zelkova serrata is very ornamental because of its attractive growth and its dark green foliage which displays shades varying from red to orange in the coming of autumn.
