Schuette's oak (Q. X schuettei)

Oaks cross easily with each other. In Quebec, we can thus observe a hybrid between the white oak and the Bur Oak, which we call the Bebb oak (Q. Bebbiana) another cross between the bicolor oak and the bur oak, called the Schuette oak (Q. X schuettei). These two species are known for their cold hardiness, their tasty acorns that drop in September and October, and their ability to tolerate and thrive on lowland and upland sites with low pH levels. variables.

This is our most popular hybrid oak in northern climates, whether for feeding deer or creating a beautiful shade tree in a garden.  This hybrid thrives even in zone 3, the coldest hardiness zone in the nearest 48, but it also performs like a champ in warmer climates. Although it does not win any records for growth speed compared to some southern red oaks and hybrids, it maintains a good growth rate and can begin producing a few acorns as early as its sixth birthday.

While this hybrid is an obvious blessing to wildlife thanks to its abundant crops of low-tannin acorns, it is also the ideal tree for the yard or landscaping because of its beautiful appearance and of its solid nature. Don't worry about whether or not you need Schuettes Oak...it's a real winner that everyone should incorporate into their property, especially our more northern customers.
