Native species in eastern North America, from Mexico to southern Ontario. The very small tree (4 to 7 meters) can sometimes have a two-trunk shape. It has beautiful large 'heart' shaped leaves when they are fully developed. The tree is magnificent for its spring flowering of small, intense pink pea-like flowers in bud that become paler with time along the trunk and branches. It is sure to attract attention when in bloom as you will magically see flowers popping out from everywhere which is unique. It produces flattened pods of 5 to 10 cm towards the end of summer.
