The red mulberry is a truly original and rare small to medium sized tree...you may have never seen a tree like this. It produces colorful, sweet berries resembling blackberries borne on branches. It has beautiful foliage in summer but requires very moist and deep soil because it does not like gravelly or sandy soils. The red mulberry tree will make a name for itself in those around you and beautify your land. It will give you a production of berries that you can eat fresh or made into jelly or jam. The red mulberry has a threatened species status in the wild in Ontario. It is only found in a few places, notably at Point Pelee. We recommend it for tight spaces in the city and to add to your landscaping and flowerbeds. It has proven its hardiness in our latitudes in zone 4b but has difficulty Augusting the end of its shoots of the year if the autumns are short. It is an ideal species for gardens and edible planting projects (permaculture).
