Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, better known as Cunningham's royal palm or Bangalow palm, is an elegant, graceful, fast-growing palm tree native to Australia.
It is a spectacular ornamental palm tree, highly prized in tropical and Mediterranean gardens, but also sometimes grown indoors or in conservatories in cooler climates.

🔎 Identification

  • Scientific name: Archontophoenix cunninghamiana H. Wendl. & Drude
  • Family: Arecaceae
  • Common names: Cunningham's Royal Palm, Bangalow palm (Australia), King palm (English)
  • Origin: Eastern Australia (rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales)

🌳 Botanical description

  • Type: single-trunk palm tree (non-suckering)
  • Adult height:
    • 🌿 In the ground (warm climate): 15 to 25 m
    • 🪴 In a pot/greenhouse: 2 to 5 m
  • Trunk:
    • Smooth, light gray to greenish, often ringed with leaf scars
    • Crowned with a bright green shaft (the sleeve at the base of the palms)
  • Leaves:
    • Pinnate, arched, 2 to 3 m long
    • Bright green above, silvery green below → very decorative effect

🌸 Flowering and fruit

  • Flowering: in summer
  • Flowers: small, whitish to cream-colored, very honey-producing, arranged in large drooping panicles under the green trunk
  • Fruit:
    • Small bright red berries, decorative
    • Very popular with birds
    • ⚠️ Not edible for humans

🌡️ Hardiness

  • USDA zone: 9 to 11
  • Withstands approximately -2 to -3°C for short periods
  • Foliage destroyed at -4 to -5°C
  • 🌤️ Suitable for mild Mediterranean, Atlantic, or tropical climates
  • Can be grown in pots in colder climates (to be overwintered in a frost-free location)

🌞 Exposure and soil

  • Exposure: full sun to partial shade (prefers filtered light when young)
  • Soil:
    • Rich, cool to moist, well-drained
    • Does not tolerate prolonged drought well
    • Prefers slightly acidic soils
  • Watering: regular, especially in summer; likes slightly humid environments

Growth

  • Fast in warm, humid climates 🌱
  • Reaches full size in 10 to 15 years in good conditions

  • Remove dry fronds cleanly
  • Water regularly without leaving standing water
  • In pots: repot every 2–3 years with a good, rich, well-draining substrate
