In late winter or early spring, before the leaves unfurl, vernal witch hazel has yellow and orange to red flowers with a spicy scent that appear in mid-March and last three to four weeks . The new foliage is an attractive bronzy red color that progresses to dark green then turns a rich buttery yellow to golden yellow in fall. Dried leaves often persist into winter. The fruit capsules ripen in September or October, when they split to expel the black seeds that attract birds. Plants can sucker to form colonies. It is a great specimen plant for the naturalized landscape. zone 4
