🌰 ‘Manregion’ Walnut Tree

🔸 Full name

  • Common name: ‘Manregion’ Walnut Tree
  • Botanical name: Juglans regia ‘Manregion’
  • Family: Juglandaceae
  • Type: Nut tree (common walnut tree)

🌳 General description

  • Origin: Walnut selection native to the Puget Sound region (northwestern United States, near Seattle)
  • Habit: Fairly broad and rounded, well branched
  • Mature height: 8 to 12 m
  • Width: 6 to 10 m
  • Growth: Medium to fast
  • Special features: Very hardy, suited to regions with cold winters and cool springs; produces good-sized, very tasty nuts.

🌰 Fruit

  • Size: Medium to large
  • Shell: Moderately thick, fairly smooth, easy to crack
  • Nut: Blonde, well-filled, sweet and rich flavor
  • Kernel yield: 50 to 55%
  • Flavor: Very good, slightly sweet and buttery
  • Harvest period: October (late)
  • Storage: Excellent—several months in a dry, cool place

🌼 Flowering

  • Flowering month: April to May (medium to late)
  • Type: Monoecious (male catkins and female flowers on the same tree)
  • Male and female flowering: Generally well synchronized (protogynous variety—female before male)
  • Sensitivity: Flowers tolerate cold better than those of earlier varieties

🌾 Pollination

  • Type: Partially self-fertile, but better fruiting with a pollinator
  • Good pollinators: ‘Cascade’, ‘Fernor’, ‘Franquette’ or ‘Fernette’
  • Compatibility: Good with ‘Cascade’ (similar flowering windows)
  • Flowering: Medium to late

🌱 Cultivation and care

  • Exposure: Full sun, open location
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, well-drained—prefers loamy-clay soils rich in humus
  • pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline
  • Watering: Useful for the first 2–3 years, then unnecessary except in severe drought
  • Pruning: Not necessary — remove dead wood and poorly oriented branches
  • Fertilization: Compost or decomposed manure in the fall every 2–3 years

🧊 Hardiness

  • USDA hardiness zone: 4 to 8
  • Minimum temperature tolerance: Down to -30°C 🌨️
👉 Excellent cold resistance: one of the hardiest Juglans regia walnut trees.

🌿 Resistance and health

  • Disease resistance: Good, but like all walnut trees, susceptible to:
    • Bacterial blight (Xanthomonas arboricola)
    • Anthracnose (Gnomonia leptostyla)
  • Prevention: Bordeaux mixture at bud break and in fall, good aeration of the canopy

💡 Advantages

✅ Very hardy (withstands harsh winters)
✅ Nuts with remarkable taste
✅ Good compatibility with other varieties (including ‘Cascade’)
✅ Suitable for cool or mountainous regions

⚠️ Points to consider

⚠️ Late variety: avoid in areas with very short autumns (risk of incomplete harvest)
⚠️ Slightly late bud break: advantage against frost, but slightly later production
