Tomentose hickory is one of the most abundant hickory species found in the Northeast. It grows sporadically in a few places in southern Ontario but is not present in southern Quebec. Here, it is at the limit of its climatic potential for its introduction. It reaches a good size, although in our latitudes it will grow more slowly. It has a rather elongated shape upwards even in open terrain. It produces edible nuts that are a little larger than those of shagbark hickory but with a thick shell and a more neutral taste. Its leaves, which generally have 7 leaflets, are large and pubescent below. It grows better in dry, rocky or sandy soils on slopes than in heavy clay soils.
