Sold with root ball: (Root ball plus root system)

Main characteristics

  • Hardiness/growing zone
    • Zones 2-8 or 3-9 depending on the source. It is very cold-hardy and suited to harsh winters.
  • Climate/soil tolerance
    • Thrives in a wide range of soil types, including heavier/clay soils. Tolerates cool climates.
  • Yield
    • Very good long-term yield. After a slightly slower establishment phase compared to some Jersey varieties, it often exceeds them in productivity over several years.
  • Shoot quality
    • Green, sturdy shoots with tight, well-closed tips. They remain of good quality even as they grow.
  • Productive life
    • Long production life—often 15-25 years for well-maintained plants.
  • Diseases/resistance
    • Intermediate resistance to rust, tolerance to certain soil/replanting problems.

Advantages

  • Excellent value for northern areas or cold winters due to its hardiness.
  • High and sustainable yield, making it attractive to growers or gardeners who rely on asparagus as a long-term crop.
  • Good quality, firm spears, which is desirable for both fresh consumption and markets.
  • Less management required for male plants (no seed production, less variability).

Limitations/things to watch out for

  • As with all asparagus, the first two years after planting (or even three) are mainly spent establishing the root crown (the underground system). Harvesting should not be done too early, as this can weaken the plant.
  • Although it tolerates heavy soils, it still requires good drainage—excessively wet or poorly drained soils can cause root problems.
  • Intermediate rust resistance: this is not immunity. If conditions are favorable for rust (humidity, heat, poorly aerated soils), it can be affected.

Hardiness Zones

  • 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a

Light

  • Full-sun
