Cassilla (contraction of cass-is and gooseberry, is the fruit of the cassiaberry a hybrid between the blackcurrant and the gooseberry: Ribes nigrum × Ribes uva-crispa.
The shrub has no thorns and produces large, smooth black fruits having an acidic flavor with a light fragrance. Its fruits are used to make jams and sorbets.
