The SLATE hazelnut tree produces large-sized hazelnuts. It is completely resistant to hazel blight. It will grow in zone 4b and above but it is more adapted to zone 5a-5b. However, you can try it in 4b but in a place protected from high winds because the male catkins can burn in the cold in winter. It has a very high hazelnut productivity around the age of 12 years. The tree is compact and can be carried on a single stem or two. Average pollinator. Very cold winters like those of 2014 and 2015 can cause male catkins to die, resulting in low production the following summer, or even no production depending on the female flowers and other pollinating hazel trees around.
Note: consider pairing it with other hazelnut trees of the same species or other species to promote good pollination.
