The earliest of all our varieties to ripen, with reliable harvests of medium-sized fruit. A great variety to try in cooler regions, or use it as an early ripener in long summer regions to extend your harvest of these sweet treasures!. 'Pennsylvania Golden' has been a customer favorite at many fall markets in the eastern United States. Even skeptics of this special fruit have been converted into paw paw lovers by this strain! It's a real taste treat - smooth, custard-style texture, with just the right balance of subtle vanilla scent, tropical sweet fruity taste and pleasant aftertaste. This tree is originally a spontaneous seedling and is superior to its parent. Large fruit with few seeds (6% by weight). The texture is firmer than wild paw paws. Fruits are often borne in single-fruited clusters. Good yields. The fruits ripen around the end of September or October in our latitudes.

For zones 4a-4b and even up to 5a it is recommended to grow it in a pot like all grafted paw paws or to plant it in a place highly protected from the winds. For adequate pollination, plant another variety of paw paw.

Pollination: Other varieties grafted or seeded will pollinate well. For good pollination, plant trees only 8-15 feet apart. Paw paws are neither male nor female, but rather have "male and female" flower parts on each flower. Each tree is capable of bearing fruit if it is well pollinated with pollen from another genetically different plant. Hand pollination produces the heaviest fruits.

Paw paws are generally remarkably resistant to disease and insects.
Site requirements: Full sun location for best fruit production. Paw paws grow in the shade but produce much less fruit. Paw paws tolerate a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained and there is thick mulch and plenty of fertilizer and water. Protected locations, such as the south or southwest side of a building, are ideal on very windy sites.

Size at maturity in open ground: 15-20′ tall and wide, depending on location, care and pruning to reduce height. We recommend directing them about 10 inches and removing suckers, which keep the trees very manageable and small. In large pot keep plants around 6-8 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide

Paw paws (Asimina Triloba) are related to Custard apples and cherimoyas in the sugar apple family, yet they grow in the temperate zone, having moved north when Ice Age glaciers retreated. Flavors of mango, melon, banana, raspberry and pineapple are present in this creamy fruit. Like many fruits, if you don't know what you're doing and you let them overripe, or pick them before they're ripe; They won't taste very good!

Flowers: Dormant, velvety, dark brown flower buds develop in the axils of previous years' leaves. They produce brown upside down flowers up to 2 inches across. The normal flowering period is approximately 6 weeks from May to June depending on the climate zone and variety. The flower consists of 2 whorls of 3 petals each and the calyx has 3 sepals. Each flower contains several ovaries which explains why a single flower can produce several fruits. .Clusters!
