The European beech, Fagus sylvatica, is often considered not very hardy when in reality, several specimens grow without problem, sometimes for several decades, in areas much colder than the region of Montreal (especially in zones 4a and 4b. In our American latitudes, it reaches a height of 15 m but in Europe it can be double. It has a rounded or spreading habit when in an open environment. Its growth here is quite slow to medium in certain cases. The species has a good longevity estimated at more than 400 years. The tree has an average tolerance to shade at a young age. It likes cool and moist but well-drained soil. It has excellent resistance to urban pollution.
The type of rooting is rather superficial in beech trees.
