The tamarack can reach nearly 20 meters in height. Its bark is smooth and gray when young, then becomes scaly and reddish brown as it ages. Its foliage appears in bouquets of 10 to 20 needles (sometimes many more) 2 to 3 centimeters long. They are soft and flexible, bluish green, then turn yellow in autumn before falling. It is a beautiful ornamental tree for colder locations.
The seeds of tamarack grow in a cone one to two centimeters long, but the tree does not produce them until it is ten years old.
Size: 20 meters in height and trunk 60 centimeters in diameter, sometimes more
Humidity: Adapts to varying degrees of soil humidity
Shade: Tolerates no shade – needs full sun
Soil: Grows in varied sites but adapts wonderfully to humid sites or with Podzol or yellow earth.
The tamarack is well suited to landscaping because of its harmonious shape and the bright yellow color of its needles in autumn.
