The Cucumber-leaved Magnolia is the only species of magnolia native to Canada. In spring, when its leaves are well developed, it is adorned with moderately visible greenish-yellow flowers. It produces fruits which, when immature, bear a slight resemblance to cucumbers, hence its English name (cucumber tree). Mature fruits turn red. This tree grows in rich, well-drained soils. In Ontario, it can reach 30 meters in height and is considered an endangered species at the provincial and national level. It is perfectly rustic in southern Quebec. It is recommended for ornamentation because of its magnificent and generous foliage and for its rarity. Hardy up to zone 4b.
