The Columnar English Oak, is relatively moderate size, dense tree that is grown for its upright habit and its foliage which persists once winter arrives. It is planted in full sun, and it accepts all types of soil, deep, loose and well drained. Slow growing, its foliage is deciduous and dark green on top, but paler below. The lobed leaves turn golden brown or tan in fall. Flowering in spring produces yellow catkins. The acorns, the fruits, are very hard, and only serve as food for animals. Pruning, if necessary, is done at the end of winter before the buds open, to remove dead wood, or prune superfluous branches. These trees are planted in parks and public spaces because they are resistant, do not require much maintenance, and their columnar habit does not take up much space with age.
