The Black Mission fig (Ficus carica 'Black Mission') is a popular, highly productive fig variety with deep purplish-black skin, pink flesh, and a rich, sweet, berry-like flavor. It is self-pollinating and produces two crops annually: a heavy breba crop in mid-summer and a main crop in early fall.
Key Characteristics and Care:
  • Best Use: Excellent for eating fresh, drying, or in desserts.
  • Climate: Thrives in hot, dry, sunny locations.
  • Cold Hardiness: Generally low; requires protection in cold climates (e.g., in Quebec) by covering with burlap or storing in a container in a garage/greenhouse.
  • Growth: Grows into a large, long-lived tree, but can be kept smaller with pruning.
  • Fruit: Large, purple-black skin that often cracks when ripe.
Introduced to California by Spanish missionaries in 1768, it remains a standard, high-quality variety in North America
