It is a small to medium-sized tree rare in Canada and concentrated in southern Ontario in a few rare places. There, it is frequently planted as an ornamental tree for its attractive habit and its scarlet color in autumn. Its shiny leaves have a very beautiful shape and give it a tropical appearance. It is the only representative of its kind in Canada. It is a light species that tolerates relatively humid and clayey soils. Its small honey-producing flowers attract bees in spring. The tree produces many small branches much like swamp oak and has a very dense appearance. It is hardy in southern Quebec although it reaches its limit quickly towards the more northern regions. See technical sheet to find out the planting possibilities in your area.
