The variety Maria's Joyis of excellent quality. Winner of many US Pawpaw competitions over the years for taste and fruit size. More resistant to cold than the averageAsimina Triloba. Considered not only one of the best cultivars in general, it also has good potential for the development of other superior cultivars. The texture and flavor of the fruit is great, buttery and very sweet.

Pollination: Other varieties grafted or seeded will pollinate well. For good pollination, plant trees only 8-15 feet apart. Paw paws are neither male nor female, but rather have "male and female" flower parts on each flower. Each tree is capable of bearing fruit if it is well pollinated with pollen from another genetically different plant. Hand pollination produces the heaviest fruits.

Paw paws are generally remarkably resistant to disease and insects.
Site requirements: Full sun location for best fruit production. Paw paws grow in the shade but produce much less fruit. Paw paws tolerate a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained and there is thick mulch and plenty of fertilizer and water. Protected locations, such as the south or southwest side of a building, are ideal on very windy sites.

Size at maturity in open ground: 15-20′ tall and wide, depending on location, care and pruning to reduce height. We recommend directing them about 10 inches and removing suckers, which keep the trees very manageable and small. In large pots keep plants around 6-8 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide

Paw paws (Asimina Triloba) are related to Custard apples and cherimoyas in the sugar apple family, yet they grow in the temperate zone, having moved north when Ice Age glaciers retreated. Flavors of mango, melon, banana, raspberry and pineapple are present in this creamy fruit. Like many fruits, if you don't know what you're doing and you let them overripe, or pick them before they're ripe; They won't taste very good!

Flowers: Dormant, velvety, dark brown flower buds develop in the axils of previous years' leaves. They produce brown upside down flowers up to 2 inches across. The normal flowering period is approximately 6 weeks from May to June depending on the climate zone and variety. The flower consists of 2 whorls of 3 petals each and the calyx has 3 sepals. Each flower contains several ovaries which explains why a single flower can produce several fruits.
