🌿American holly - Ilex opaca

🔸 Full name

  • Common name: American holly, American holly
  • Botanical name: Ilex opaca
  • Family: Aquifoliaceae
  • Type: Evergreen shrub or small tree

🌳 General description

  • Origin: Eastern and southeastern United States
  • Habit: Conical to pyramidal, dense and elegant
  • Mature height: 6 to 12 m (sometimes more in its native range)
  • Width: 3 to 6 m
  • Growth: Slow to moderate
  • Special features: Evergreen, matte foliage (less shiny than European holly, Ilex aquifolium), very hardy and ornamental in winter.

🌱 Foliage

  • Type: Evergreen
  • Leaves: Oval to elliptical, thick, matte green, with slightly serrated and prickly edges
  • Length: 5 to 8 cm
  • Note: Foliage softer to the touch and less shiny than that of common holly (Ilex aquifolium).

🌸 Flowering

  • Period: May to June
  • Flowers: Small, whitish to cream-colored, inconspicuous but melliferous
  • Arrangement: Axillary (at the base of the leaves)

🍒 Fruit (berries)

  • Shape: Small spherical drupes 6–10 mm in diameter
  • Color: Bright red when ripe (rarely orange)
  • Fruiting period: Fall to winter
  • Duration: Often persist throughout the winter
  • Special feature: Toxic to humans but very popular with birds

🌾 Pollination

  • Type: Dioecious → a male and female plant are needed to produce fruit.
  • Recommended distance: 5–10 m maximum between the two.
  • Good pollinators: Other male Ilex opaca or sometimes compatible Ilex aquifolium.
  • Note: A single male plant is sufficient for several female plants.

🌿 Cultivation and care

  • Exposure: Light sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Deep, cool, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral (avoid calcareous soils)
  • Watering: Regularly for the first few years, then tolerates drought well
  • Pruning:
    • Light, preferably after flowering (June)
    • Can be pruned for hedges, topiaries, or conical shapes
  • Fertilization: Add compost or leaf mold in spring

🧊 Hardiness

  • USDA hardiness zone: 5 to 9
  • Minimum temperature: Down to -25°C
👉 Very hardy, suitable for all regions of mainland France (except extreme mountain areas).

🌿 Resistance and health

  • Disease resistance: Excellent
  • Possible sensitivities: Slight attacks by scale insects or aphids, rarely a cause for concern
  • Pollution tolerance: Good
  • Drought tolerance: Average once well established

💡 Advantages

✅ Decorative evergreen foliage
✅ Highly ornamental red berries in winter
✅ Hardy and resistant shrub
✅ Suitable for hedges, flower beds, or as a specimen plant
✅ Excellent refuge for wildlife (birds, pollinators)

⚠️ Points to consider

⚠️ Slow growth—allow time for a large specimen to develop
⚠️ Dioecious—plant at least one male for fruiting
⚠️ Fruit is toxic to humans (avoid ingestion)
