The American chestnut was particularly widespread in northeastern North America 100 years ago before being virtually wiped out by a fungus from Asia. Planted trees can survive up to 50 years and beyond and produce abundantly sweet and delicious chestnuts. The tree may never die depending on whether it is planted in an isolated area or not. Its nuts are smaller but superior in taste compared to hybrid chestnuts (less hardy) and European chestnuts (non-hardy) in Canada. It is a tree that will not fail to attract attention to your land with its superb ornamental side and it will certainly get people talking (plant in pairs at least for cross-pollination). It is also recommended for planting to produce chestnuts. It is important to continue to plant this superb tree for conservation and to promote a form of resistance of the species.
