The American beautyberry is a species of deciduous shrub in the family Verbenaceae, notable for its production of bright purple berries in tight clusters along the stems. Callicarpa means 'pretty berry' in Greek.
The berries that persist into winter are an important source of food for birds and other animals (hence the value of planting them in gardens). However, they are not among the most appreciated and are only consumed when other resources are exhausted. They are very astringent and considered inedible for humans.
