Magnolia tripetala, umbrella magnolia, is native to eastern North America from Florida to the United States. It is found from the East Coast to the states of Oklahoma, Missouri and Indiana in the west. The region thus includes the mountainous region of the Appalachians where it is most frequently encountered. The parasol magnolia has large, shiny leaves 30 to 50 cm long. In its natural environment in the USA, it can reach 15 meters high. Over time, its crown widens widely in the shape of a parasol, hence its vernacular name. The flowers, with a diameter of 15-25 cm, have six to nine creamy-white petals and a long red pistil, which subsequently develop into 10 cm long red fruits containing several also red seeds. . It is being tested at our nursery and we believe it is hardy to zone 5a but we don't really recommend it under that zone. It has light gray bark, smooth and not cracked. Its branches are glabrous, olive brown, stocky, and then light brown, quite shiny. This tree is easy to cultivate and grows quickly if it is given a suitable environment: acidic soil, not too heavy, humus-rich and fresh. It likes light shade and tolerates full sun. Places exposed to strong winds should be avoided, as its large leaves can tear. Its large leaves give it an undeniable exotic appearance. This small tree will be suitable for small gardens, but avoid proximity to the house, as the very strong scent of its flowers can be unpleasant. It should be noted that it is a fast growing tree in a sheltered position.

IMPORTANT: We do not deliver trees that are 7' and taller! (Pick-up at the nursery only). Orders placed from now on will be delivered in the spring. Please select your preferred delivery week at the bottom of the cart.
