Native to the Rocky Mountains, it extends from Mexico (23° north latitude) to Canada (52° north latitude) via the United States. It is present in altitudes between 300 and 2100 meters. In its original habitat, it reaches a size of 40 to 50 meters with a diameter of 3 meters. In Europe, its size does not exceed 40 meters. It can live 500 to 600 years. Its deep and developed root system allows it to withstand long-term drought. Its growth is slow in the first years before accelerating. At 20 years old, the tree reaches 8 meters. Its wood is resistant, rich in resin and is often used in construction.

The light green needles measure 15 to 25 centimeters and 1.5 mm wide. The needles are grouped in threes on the branches. The tree flowers in early June and the cones mature the following year. The cones, 8 to 15 cm long and 4 to 7 cm wide when ripe, are light brown and egg-shaped. Its scales are often equipped with a spine. The 6 to 9 mm seeds are brown and have a 2 cm wing. Hardy in zone 4b.
