Flowring Quince tree Seedlings (chaeanomeles speciosa)

The quince tree (speciosa) is a plant of the Rosaceae family, native to China. It is a shrub which does not have its own vernacular name in French. Horticulturists use the very general term Japanese quince or flowering quince to designate all cultivated horticultural Chaenomeles (C. japonica, C. speciosa, and all hybrids between the Chaenomeles). In its country of origin, its fruit has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has also been cultivated in Chinese gardens since ancient times.

Chaenomeles speciosa is a thorny shrub 2-3 meters high. The deciduous, elliptical to lanceolate leaves are borne on a 1 cm petiole. The base is wedged and the margin is locked. Early spring flowers are 3-5 cm in diameter. Carried by a very short or even absent pedicel, they are grouped by 3-5 in fascicles on last year's branches. They are scarlet red, sometimes pink or white. The 5 sepals are erect, suborbicular. The pommaceous "false fruit" is 4-6 cm in diameter (larger than that of C. japonica). It is very fragrant, yellow or yellowish green in color. It is a very beautiful species with very showy flowers and is hardy up to zone 4a. It will add character to your designs in tight spaces near the house or other buildings.
