The European dogwood is a vigorous shrub producing small yellow flowers on bare branches in late winter, before dark green leaves develop. These flowers are very popular with foragers since they appear at a time when nectar sources are rare. They are followed in autumn by small red fruits, appreciated by birds, edible by humans when they are very ripe or overripe, otherwise they are laxative. They are consumed in wine, cooked, in jellies, in jams.
It is interesting for its flowering in spring and its fruiting. Whether for their spring or summer flowering in bracts, their fall colors, their flamboyantly colored wood in winter or their tiered habit, you will always find a species of dogwood to install in your garden.
