🧐 Origin & place among varieties

  • Velvaglo is a cultivar developed in Vineland, Ontario, as part of efforts to create apricot trees suited to Ontario's climate.
  • It is listed as “restricted planting” for certain areas of Ontario, meaning that it is recommended, but with reservations depending on local conditions.

Main characteristics

  • Hardiness zone / climate
    • Zones 5-9 depending on nurseries.
  • Flowering
    • Medium flowering — neither very early nor very late.
  • Harvest
    • Late July/early August in regions such as Ontario. Velvaglo is picked about a week before the Veecot variety.
  • Fertility/pollination
    • Self-fertile — Velvaglo produces fruit on its own. However, as with many apricot trees, the presence of another tree can improve yield or fruit size.
  • Fruit
    • Bright orange skin, juicy flesh, freestone (stone separates easily from flesh). Good flavor, pleasant for fresh consumption, canning, and drying.
  • Yield/use
    • Suitable for the fresh market and home processing (canning, drying); not a large fruit for long-term storage, and fresh shelf life is limited (a few days) according to nurseries.

⚠️ Limitations & challenges

  • Susceptibility to bacterial spot: Velvaglo can be seriously affected by black spot in some years.
  • Color at the stem end: even when commercially ripe, the background color (the skin beneath the stem end) may remain green, which may influence the appearance or perception of ripeness for some buyers.
  • Limited shelf life: for fresh use, the fruit must be consumed or processed quickly after harvest (refrigeration required, not ideal for prolonged storage).

🎯 For which uses & situations is Velvaglo a good choice?

  • Velvaglo is particularly interesting if:
    • You want an early (or rather less late) apricot in your season, to extend the harvest or to start earlier.
    • You live in hardiness zone 5 or higher, with cold but not extreme winters, and springs where late frosts are a moderate risk.
    • You want fruit for fresh consumption, the local market, or for canning or drying.
    • You can pay attention to disease management, especially bacterial spots, and choose a good location with air circulation and well-drained soil, avoiding stagnant moisture.
