Rhododendron × ‘P.J.M. Elite’ – PJM Hybrids Group

🌿 Description

Rhododendron ‘P.J.M. Elite’ is an evergreen shrub known for its abundant spring blooms and hardiness.
Part of the famous P.J.M. Hybrids series, it produces a profusion of mauve-pink to lavender flowers in early spring, contrasting beautifully with its dark green foliage, which turns purple-bronze in winter.
Compact, floriferous, and cold-hardy, it is an excellent choice for northern gardens, borders, or flower beds.

📏 Characteristics

  • Mature height: 1.2 to 1.8 m
  • Width: 1.2 to 1.5 m
  • Habit: rounded, dense and well-branched
  • Flowering: April to May (early)
  • Flower color: mauve to lavender pink, clustered in bouquets
  • Foliage: evergreen, dark green turning bronze-purple in winter
  • Hardiness: zone 4 (down to -29°C)
  • Growth: moderate
  • Exposure: bright partial shade or gentle sun (avoid hot full sun)
  • Soil: acidic, cool, well-drained and rich in organic matter

⚠️ Growing tips

  • Plant in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 6.0) that is well-drained and rich in humus.
  • Avoid calcareous soils and excess standing water.
  • Apply a mulch of pine needles or bark to keep the soil cool and acidic.
  • Water regularly, especially after planting and during dry periods.
  • Prune lightly after flowering to remove dead flowers and maintain shape.
  • Protect from direct cold winds in winter.
