  • Botanical name: Lindera benzoin
  • Family: Lauraceae
  • Type: Deciduous shrub

🌳 General description

  • Origin: Eastern North America (wet forests and forest edges)
  • Habit: Rounded, dense, supple, with fragrant foliage
  • Mature height: 2 to 3 m
  • Width: 2 to 3 m
  • Growth: Average
  • Special features: Very aromatic foliage when crushed (lemon-spice scent) and very early flowering, before the leaves appear.

🌱 Foliage

  • Type: Deciduous
  • Leaves: Oval, entire, slightly lanceolate (5 to 15 cm)
  • Color: Light green in spring, medium green in summer, bright golden yellow in fall 🍂
  • Fragrance: Very pleasant lemon-spice scent when crushed
  • Special feature: Leaves and twigs were once used to make a fragrant tea

🌸 Flowering

  • Period: March to April (before leafing)
  • Flowers: Small, star-shaped, light yellow, very numerous
  • Arrangement: In small, tightly packed clusters on bare twigs
  • Advantage: Very early flowering, honey-producing and bright at the end of winter

🍒 Fruit (berries)

  • Type: Ovoid drupes
  • Color: Bright red when ripe
  • Period: August to October
  • Taste: Very aromatic (peppery and lemony spices)
  • Special feature: Toxic to humans when raw, but enjoyed by migratory birds 🐦
  • Advantage: Very decorative on yellow autumn foliage

🌾 Pollination

  • Type: Dioecious → both male and female plants are needed to produce fruit
  • Pollination: By insects
  • Recommended distance: 3–5 m between male and female plants
  • Note: A single male plant can pollinate several female plants

🌿 Cultivation and care

  • Exposure: Light sun to partial shade (avoid hot full sun)
  • Soil: Rich, humus-rich, cool to moist, well-drained
  • pH: Acidic to neutral (tolerates slightly calcareous if not dry)
  • Watering: Regular in the first few years; likes cool soil in summer
  • Pruning: Not much needed — only to balance the shape after flowering
  • Fertilization: Compost or leaf mold each spring

🧊 Hardiness

  • USDA hardiness zone: 4 to 9
  • Minimum temperature: Down to -30°C 🌨️
👉 Very hardy in all regions of France.

🌿 Resistance and health

  • Disease resistance: Excellent
  • Pests: Very few (occasional aphids or caterpillars)
  • Pollution tolerance: Average
  • Drought tolerance: Average to low — prefers soil that stays cool
