🌸 Buddleja davidii

🔸 Full name

  • Common name: Butterfly bush, David's buddleia
  • Botanical name: Buddleja davidii
  • Family: Scrophulariaceae (or Buddlejaceae depending on classification)
  • Type: Deciduous ornamental shrub

🌿 General description

  • Origin: China, discovered by missionary and naturalist Armand David
  • Habit: Upright, bushy, and flexible
  • Mature height: 2 to 4 m (depending on variety and size)
  • Width: 2 to 3 m
  • Growth: Very fast
  • Special feature: Long and abundant summer flowering, attracts butterflies and bees in large numbers.

🌼 Flowering

  • Period: June to September (sometimes until October if mild)
  • Colors: Depending on variety — purple, mauve, pink, white, blue, crimson, sometimes variegated
  • Inflorescences: Long conical spikes 15 to 40 cm long, fragrant
  • Advantage: Nectar-producing flowers, very popular with pollinators 🦋🐝

🌱 Foliage

  • Type: Deciduous (loses its leaves in winter)
  • Leaves: Opposite, lanceolate, gray-green above, whitish below
  • Texture: Slightly downy

🌾 Cultivation and care

  • Exposure: Full sun ☀️
  • Soil: Light, well-drained, even poor or calcareous; tolerates drought
  • Watering: Moderate — only during periods of high heat in the first year
  • Pruning:
    • Prune severely at the end of winter (February-March) to 20–30 cm above the ground to encourage abundant flowering on new wood
    • Remove wilted flowers to prolong flowering
  • Fertilization: Undemanding; a little compost in spring is sufficient

🌾 Propagation

  • Methods: Very easy to propagate from cuttings (in summer or from dry wood in winter).
  • Rapid emergence: Strong ability to self-seed spontaneously (sometimes invasive).

🧊 Hardiness

  • USDA hardiness zone: 5 to 9.
  • Minimum temperature: Down to -20°C.
👉 Very hardy throughout France, except for prolonged frost on young potted plants.

🌿 Resistance and health

  • Diseases: Not very susceptible; sometimes aphids or red spider mites in dry conditions
  • Pollution resistance: Excellent — perfect for urban environments
  • Drought tolerance: Very good once established

💡 Advantages

✅ Long, abundant, and fragrant flowering
✅ Very attractive to butterflies and pollinators
✅ Fast growth and easy maintenance
✅ Tolerates pruning and poor soil well

⚠️ Points to note

⚠️ Self-seeds easily—may become invasive in some areas (especially wetlands or riverbanks).
⚠️ Prune severely each year to prevent exhaustion and maintain a compact shape.
