🌳 General description

  • Name: Blenheim apricot tree (or Royal Blenheim)
  • Origin: United Kingdom (early 19th century)
  • Type: Old variety, self-fertile

🍑 Fruit

  • Size: Medium to large
  • Shape: Rounded, slightly asymmetrical
  • Skin color: Golden yellow, sometimes with a slight orange or reddish tinge in the sun
  • Flesh: Orange-yellow, juicy, melting
  • Taste: Very sweet, rich in aroma, slightly tart – often considered one of the best apricots in terms of flavor

🌱 Tree characteristics

  • Vigor: Moderately vigorous
  • Flowering: Early to mid-season (beware of late frosts)
  • Self-fertile: Yes (but a pollinator can improve production)
  • Productivity: Good, but may vary depending on climatic conditions

🌞 Growing conditions

  • Exposure: Full sun, sheltered location (flowers are sensitive to frost)
  • Ideal climate: Mediterranean or warm temperate; summers must be sunny
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile, preferably calcareous or slightly clayey

📅 Harvest

  • Period: Late June to mid-July (varies by region)
  • Consumption: Ideal for fresh consumption, but also excellent in jams, compotes, and pastries

Advantages

  • Exceptional flavor
  • Self-fertile
  • Heirloom variety

⚠️ Disadvantages

  • Sensitive to spring frosts due to early flowering
  • Less suited to cold or humid climates
  • Less resistant than some modern varieties

💡 Good to know:

  • Blenheim has long been grown in California, where it is highly prized. It is considered a heritage variety that is endangered in some regions, despite its excellent taste.

🌸 Tip:

  • If you live in a borderline zone (zone 6 or late frost climate), you can:
    • Choose a very sunny and sheltered location.
    • Put a winter cover or temporary protection in place during flowering.
    • Avoid cold depressions or valley bottoms.
