Swamp white Oak, Quercus Bicolor

The swamp white oak is one of our 4 native oaks from southern Quebec. However, it is rarely planted. It is even rarer in nature than the white oak and remains relatively unknown to the public. More common in Ontario, It is found only in a few isolated places in the extreme southwest of Quebec along the Richelieu River, in the Châtauguay region and in a few other scattered places. It looks great and has beautiful foliage. It is the only Quebec oak that grows well in poorly drained soil, even flooded part of the year. The pin oak does the same but it is not native to southern Quebec. Quercus bicolor is ideal for its ornamental value (thick, shiny green leaves with a white hairy tone under), for tight plantings to produce quality logs, for its renaturalization in humid environments and for the enrichment of a wasteland or woodland. It is not known for its colorful foliage in fall though. Hardy up to zone 3b. Survive very well in the north outside their natural range.

Field grown (bare root) oaks are best transplanted in the spring before leafing out, but smaller container grown trees can be moved with special care watering later in the spring or fall .
