🌰 Cascade Walnut Tree

🔸 Full name

  • Common name: Cascade Walnut Tree
  • Botanical name: Juglans regia ‘Cascade’
  • Family: Juglandaceae
  • Type: Nut tree

🌳 General description

  • Origin: American selection (Oregon State University, USA)
  • Habit: Upright and broad, well-balanced
  • Mature height: 8 to 12 m
  • Width: 6 to 10 m
  • Growth: Medium to fast
  • Special feature: Semi-early variety, very productive and consistent, with easy-to-crack nuts.

🌰 Fruit

  • Type: Large nuts
  • Shell: Thin, smooth, light in color, breaks easily
  • Kernel: Blonde, fleshy, well-filled
  • Taste: Sweet, flavorful, very aromatic
  • Kernel yield: Approximately 50 to 55%
  • Harvest period: Late September to early October
  • Storage: Excellent—several months in a dry, cool place

🌼 Flowering

  • Flowering months: April to May
  • Flowering type: Monoecious (male catkins and female flowers on the same tree)
  • Pollination: Early to mid-season
  • Sensitivity: Flowers may be susceptible to late frosts

🌾 Pollination

  • Type: Partially self-fertile, but production is improved with another walnut tree that flowers at a different time.
  • Good pollinators: Lara, Fernor, Franquette, Fernette or Manregion
  • Compatible flowering: Medium to late

🌱 Cultivation and care

  • Exposure: Full sun
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, cool but well-drained (avoid heavy or waterlogged soils)
  • pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline
  • Watering: Necessary in the first few years, then unnecessary except during prolonged drought
  • Pruning: Very light, in winter — remove dead wood and thin out the branches
  • Fertilization: Compost or organic fertilizer in the fall every 2–3 years

🧊 Hardiness

  • USDA hardiness zone: 5 to 9
  • Minimum temperature tolerated: Approximately -25°C
👉 Withstands winter cold well, but is susceptible to late spring frosts on young shoots.

🌿 Resistance and health

  • Disease resistance: Good overall tolerance
  • Possible sensitivities: Walnut blight (Xanthomonas arboricola), anthracnose (Gnomonia leptostyla)
  • Preventive maintenance: Spray with Bordeaux mixture at bud break and leaf fall
