General description
- Firecracker is a variety of goji berry known for:
- Its good yield of sweet red berries, which can be eaten fresh, dried, or frozen.
- Its ability to produce fruit earlier than some varieties: it bears fruit in its first few years, with higher yields around the fourth or fifth year.
- Its purple/light violet flowers (sometimes mixed with white), which appear in summer.
Physical characteristics & hardiness
- Height & width at maturity
- Generally between 1.8 and 2.5 m (≈ 6 to 8 feet) high, and similar in width, sometimes up to ~8 feet (≈ 2.4-2.5 m) depending on conditions.

- Type/habit
- Dense, multi-stemmed shrub, growing as a bush rather than strictly as a single stem. Can form spreading shrubs or hedges.

- Hardiness (zone)
- US zones 3 to 8 depending on the source. This typically corresponds to a tolerance of fairly cold winters (areas where winter temperatures can reach around -30°C or lower, depending on zone 3).

- Exposure
- Full sun to partial shade, but best production is in full sun.

- Soil
- Well-drained soil, tolerates a fairly wide range (sandy to loamy), no constantly waterlogged soil.
Advantages
- Early production: starts producing early, which is an advantage if you want to harvest quickly.
- Versatile use: berries can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in cooking/preserves.
- Ornamental: purple flowers, foliage, and red berries provide visual interest.
- Easy to grow: disease resistant, tolerant of various soil types, undemanding once established.
Limitations/things to watch out for
- Large size/space required: needs space if you want a mature plant, as it can reach ~2.5 m in width.
- Moderate maintenance: prune to limit mess (branches, fallen fruit) and prevent fruit loss or waste.
- Extreme temperatures or very cold zones: although hardy to zone 3, young plants may need protection during very harsh winters or late frosts. The graft union/roots may suffer if the ground remains frozen for too long or if snow or mulch provide insufficient protection.
- Spreading/creeping form: depending on growth, it can become invasive or take up a lot of space if not properly pruned or trained.
