Schisandra chinensis (Five Flavor Berries) is a species of wild tree vine native to northeastern China, Korea and Mongolia. Its Chinese name comes from the fact that the five flavors of Chinese cuisine are found in the plant: the fruit is sweet and its skin is sour, the stone is spicy and bitter and the chewed leaves leave a salty aftertaste. It wraps itself around trees and can reach their tops.
