Medium-sized magnolia species reaching up to 12 m high and 10 m wide. It originates from Japan and is sometimes cultivated in our latitudes. It is slow growing and hardy to zone 4a. Cottony buds appear on smooth, hairless branches before flowering. Then it bears a profusion of pure white flowers which measure about 10 cm in diameter in early spring before the leaves appear. The flowers may suffer from late spring frosts. During the first years, the flowering ofM. kobusis not abundant, but once mature, this tree will be very flowering and undoubtedly spectacular. Its thick, beautiful green leaves are magnificent and give the tree a very leafy and dense appearance. It is the ideal tree for small, well-protected spaces.
