Rare species

Oak species growing in the Midwestern United States and in a few limited locations in southern Ontario. It is a small species, sometimes even bushy, rarely reaching more than 4 to 6 m high and around 4 m wide. Beautiful tree for ornament because it does not take up much space in the layout. It has a strong resemblance to the yellow oak which is much larger than it and its leaves are larger. The acorns of the chincapin oak are edible. It is hardy in zone 4b and does best with dry, sandy soil and acidic soil with high drainage. On the other hand, it tolerates clay soils. It can be used as a tree in shelterbelts because of its tendency to remain bushy. Its leaves turn bronze or orange-red in autumn. We recommend you try it.
