🌳 Green Pillar Oak (Quercus palustris ‘Green Pillar’)
🌲 General description
Green Pillar is a columnar variety of pin oak (Quercus palustris), selected for its very narrow, vertical shape, ideal when space is limited or when a strong architectural accent is desired in landscaping.
📏 Size and shape
- Mature height: approximately 12–18 m (≈ 40–60 ft).
- Mature width: ≈ 2.5–4 m (≈ 8–13 ft), giving it a very narrow columnar shape.
- Medium to fast growth, with almost vertical, tightly packed branches.
🍃 Foliage and seasons
- Leaves: dark green, glossy in summer.
- Fall color: spectacular bright red to scarlet, providing beautiful seasonal interest.
- Fall/winter: some leaves may persist late into the season on young trees (marcescence varies depending on exposure).
🌞 Growing conditions
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade.
- Soil type: prefers moist to cool, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (tolerates wet soils better than many other oaks).
- Hardiness: zones 4–8 (very hardy) — tolerates cold winters (≈ -30°C).
- Care: low to moderate — regular watering in the first few years, minimal pruning required.
🌳 Landscaping uses
This columnar oak is particularly well suited for use as:
- 📍 A tree for planting in rows or in a narrow hedge along a driveway or street.
- 🌿 Vertical insulation in small gardens or urban spaces.
- 💫 Accent/landscape tree to structure a space without taking up much horizontal space.
🍁 Strengths
✅ Very narrow shape, perfect for small spaces.
✅ Decorative foliage in summer and fall.
✅ Good tolerance to wet soil (compared to some other columnar oaks).
✅ Easy maintenance once established.
🌾 Good to know
- This cultivar is a special form of pin oak, selected for its regular vertical growth.
- Like all oaks, it also produces small acorns, but these are generally inconspicuous.
