The chinkapin oak is a medium size tree from the white oak group. It is difficult to find in nurseries and grows in southern Ontario in rare places including Point Pelee National Park. Although it grows in southern Ontario, it is hardy for southern Quebec and the Maritimes and few people know it. At our nursery, our parent Chikapin oak trees produce acorns since their age of 12 years old and they survived very cold winters with below -30 celcius. Its beautiful leaves have a shape similar to those of the American chestnut but shorter. The Chikapin oak has the sweetest edible acorn in all of the oak species in USA and Canada. The tree has a very good ornamental value in addition to its rarity. This type of oak would be greatly highlighted if cities and park administrations would choose it.
