🌿 Viburnum lantana — Wayfaring tree

The wayfaring tree (also known as Manchurian viburnum or flexible viburnum) is a deciduous shrub native to Europe and Western Asia. It is prized for its hardiness, tolerance of difficult soils, and ornamental appeal throughout several seasons.

📏 Size and habit

  • Height: 2 to 4 m (sometimes more in good conditions)
  • Width: 2 to 3 m
  • Habit: dense, bushy, rounded
  • Can form a thick hedge or be planted alone.

🍃 Foliage

  • Large oval leaves, thick and downy (grayish underside).
  • Matte green in summer.
  • Beautiful yellow to red coloration in fall.

🌸 Flowering

  • May to June.
  • Creamy white flowers grouped in flat corymbs (somewhat like a flattened umbel).
  • Melliferous: attracts bees and pollinating insects.

🍒 Fruit

  • Small berries grouped in clusters.
  • Color changes: green → bright red → black when ripe (late summer/fall).
  • Popular with birds.
  • ⚠️ Fruits are slightly toxic to humans when raw (rarely eaten).

🌱 Growing conditions

  • Exposure: sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: very tolerant (calcareous, clayey, poor, dry).
  • Hardiness: approximately zone 4 (resistant to cold).
  • Withstands drought well once established.

✂️ Care

  • Very easy to care for.
  • Light pruning after flowering if necessary.
  • May suck up slightly with age.

🌿 Ecological interest

  • Feeds birds in the fall.
  • Good shrub for country hedges and naturalized landscaping.

⚠️ Considerations in Quebec

Unlike Viburnum lentago (native to North America), winterberry is exotic. In some parts of North America, it can naturalize. However, it is not considered a major invasive species in Quebec, but native species are often preferred to promote local biodiversity.

🌟 In summary

✔️ Undemanding
✔️ Beautiful in hedges
