🍐 Asian pear tree YOINASHI (Pyrus pyrifolia)

🌸 Origin and type

  • Species: Pyrus pyrifolia (Asian pear, known as “apple-pear”)
  • Origin: Japan
  • Japanese name: Yoinashi = “good pear”
  • Type: deciduous fruit tree

🌳 Tree characteristics

  • Habit: upright to slightly spreading
  • Adult size: 4 to 6 m (depending on rootstock)
  • Vigor: medium to strong
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 5 to 10 (withstands temperatures down to approx. –25°C)
  • Exposure: full sun
  • Soil: rich, light, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic pH

🍏 Fruit

  • Shape: round, apple-like
  • Skin: golden to reddish-brown, slightly russeted
  • Flesh: white, crisp, juicy
  • Taste: sweet, very aromatic, with notes of caramel and honey
  • Storage: excellent—2 to 3 months in a cool place without loss of texture

🌼 Flowering and pollination

  • Flowering: April (depending on climate)
  • Pollination: partially self-fertile, best fruiting with another compatible Asian pear tree (e.g., Hosui, Shinseiki, Chojuro)
  • Pollinating insects: bees, bumblebees

🍂 Harvest

  • Period: late August to mid-September
  • Note: pick ripe from the tree (does not ripen after picking)

🛠️ Cultivation and care

  • Planting: fall or early spring
  • Watering: regularly for the first 2 years, then moderately
  • Pruning: lightly each winter to aerate the branches and limit the fruit load
  • Thinning: recommended to obtain large fruit
  • Diseases: good tolerance to fire blight and scab

🍽️ Use

  • Eat fresh — very thirst-quenching
  • Excellent in fruit salads or sliced in sweet and savory dishes
  • Not well suited to long cooking (flesh remains firm)
