🌲 Origin & General Information
Botanical name: Araucaria heterophylla.

Despite its common name, it is not a true pine, but a conifer belonging to the Araucariaceae family.

Native to Norfolk Island, located between Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

Highly prized as an indoor plant for its perfectly symmetrical pyramidal shape and evergreen foliage.

🌡 Hardiness, Climate, Exposure

Hardiness zones: USDA 10 to 11 (not hardy in Quebec).

Exposure: bright to very bright light. Tolerates a few hours of direct sun but prefers abundant, indirect light.

Ideal temperature: between 15 and 24 °C. Avoid temperatures below 10 °C and cold drafts.

Humidity: appreciates moderate to high air humidity (50% or more).

Soil: light potting mix, rich in organic matter and very well-drained.

đź’§ Watering & Care

Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil are dry.

The potting mix should remain slightly moist, but not waterlogged.

Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.

Fertilize once a month in spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer.

Repot every 2 to 4 years, as it prefers to be slightly root-bound in its pot.

📏 Growth

Slow to moderate growth.

Indoors, it generally reaches between 1.5 and 3 meters in height.

In its natural habitat, it can exceed 50 meters.

âś… Advantages

Very decorative due to its naturally symmetrical shape.

Evergreen conifer that retains its beautiful green color all year round.

Excellent long-lasting indoor plant; with good care, it can live for several decades.

Requires little pruning and naturally maintains a beautiful silhouette.

Non-toxic to humans. Occasional ingestion by pets usually causes only mild digestive upset.

âš  Limitations / Challenges

Cannot tolerate Quebec winters outdoors.

Dry indoor air in winter can cause tip browning.

Overwatering is the main cause of yellowing and root rot.

If the apex (terminal bud) is damaged, the tree often permanently loses its perfectly symmetrical shape.

Insufficient light leads to stretched growth and less dense branches.
