The paper birch, commonly called white birch or canoe birch in Quebec, is a very recognizable variety whose white bark easily peels off in strips.
It is one of the major components of the mixed forest of the northern United States (central and eastern) as well as Canada (central and eastern, in the boreal forest) and Russia. It is also one of the few hardwood species that coexist with the softwoods of the boreal forest.

It is a transitional species during forest regeneration, as it needs a lot of light to thrive. It is commonly found on glacial deposits or on medium to coarse textured soils in natural environments. Even though it frequently grows on cool or dry soils, paper birch is a species sensitive to drought and excess water at the root level. It adapts to several types of soils. This small to medium sized tree can reach 25 m in height and 40 cm in diameter. It has a longevity of around 140 years and rarely lives more than 200 years. It tolerates urban conditions well and has its charm for a tree on urban land due to its bark.
