The small-leaved lime tree, a non-native species, is the most common lime tree found naturally in woods in Europe. It is a medium-sized tree that can measure 20 to 25 meters. This tree is present throughout almost all of Europe, from the British Isles to Russia. It was introduced to North America over a hundred years ago. It produces an abundance of flowers in pendulous clusters of 2 to 10, with a long, pale green bract. They are very fragrant and appear towards the end of June.
The intense and very fragrant flowering attracts bees and other pollinating insects who work to collect pollen and nectars in time because the flowering lasts a short time. This lime tree especially appreciates rich, deep, fresh and clayey soils. This is a half-light essence that can accommodate a cover. Excellent ornamental tree for its flowering, the pleasant scent it gives off and its dense foliage in summer. In Canada, it grows well up to zone 3a. Magnificent specimens are even present at Lac-St-Jean near Alma.
