The flowering dogwood is a small deciduous forest understory tree that is native to southern Ontario. It is a tree frequently planted in landscaping for its large flowers, 5 to 6 cm in diameter, which appear before the leaves in spring. Its flowering is spectacular, a bit like that of magnolias. The tree does not grow very tall and very large, rarely reaching more than 8 meters high and 6 meters wide with a trunk of 20 cm in diameter.
