🌳 Origin & General Information
Botanical name: Betula nigra

Native to North America, primarily the riparian and wetland areas of the Southeast and Midwest. A medium to large tree, prized for its decorative bark that exfoliates in thin reddish-brown strips and for its majestic natural presence in aquatic landscapes or ornamental gardens.

🌡 Hardiness, Climate, Exposure
Hardiness zones: 4

Exposure: full sun to partial shade.

Soil: prefers moist but well-drained soils, tolerates clay or sandy soils, resistant to some poor soils.

📅 Flowering & Cycle
Flowering: spring, with small green/pale yellow catkins before the leaves appear.

Foliage: glossy green in summer, golden yellow in autumn.

Fruiting: small seeds in upright catkins, attracting birds and pollinators.

Advantages

  • Aesthetic: attractive bark and decorative foliage that brightens the garden all year round.
  • Disease resistant: better than white birch for certain fungal diseases.
  • Fast growing: quickly becomes a large, shade-providing tree.
  • Ecological: attracts birds and insects, stabilizes riparian soils.
  • Versatile: ideal for wet areas, landscaped gardens or ornamental plantings.

⚠ Limitations / Challenges

  • Fragile bark on young trees: some injuries can affect its appearance.
  • Size: can become imposing, space must be provided for its development.
