Adult size: 8m x 6m / Hardiness: 5b
Flowering period: late June to early July
The tree of excess.
Apart from its size, everything is disproportionate in this magnolia: very large leaves (60 to 80 cm) oval, light green, downy underneath and enormous flared flowers (30 cm in diameter) very fragrant, parchment white, purple at the base, followed large red fruits with bright orange seeds. The foliage takes on a pretty yellow tint in autumn. Grandiose.
It is recommended to install Magnolia macrophylla in a warm and sheltered location. It does not like strong and cold winter winds. Moreover, we put it rustic in minimum zone 5b. In strong winds, the branches can easily break or the leaves can be torn (given their dimensions, they offer good protection in the wind). Late spring frosts can damage buds. In cool but draining soil, this magnolia grows quite quickly. It will vegetate in dry soil. Although it prefers acidic soils, it can tolerate a little limestone if the soil is rich and deep. It will need to be installed in partial shade, this magnolia does not like scorching exposure to full sun.
