This tree, 10 to 22 m high, has flattened needles arranged on each side of the branch. They measure 3 to 4 cm long, are difficult to roll between the thumb and index finger and have two white lines on their underside. The young fir has smooth, grayish bark dotted with protruding resin vesicles. The bark becomes cracked and brownish in older trees.
It adapts to almost all habitats, but prefers moist, cool and moderately drained places. The balsam fir is the most northern of all the fir trees in the world.
Tree often used as a Christmas tree.
