The kumquat 'Centennial Variegated' (Citrus japonica 'Centennial Variegated') is an exceptional citrus fruit, widely cultivated both for its unique ornamental qualities and for its particularly flavorful fruits. Originating from a spontaneous genetic mutation discovered in Florida in 1986, this tree is considered a probable natural hybrid between the 'Nagami' kumquat and a mandarin.

Main Characteristics

  • Variegated foliage: The tree is distinguished by beautiful tricolored evergreen leaves, variegated with dark green, grayish green, and cream white. Young shoots sometimes display lovely pinkish hues.
  • Unique striped fruits: Unlike classic kumquats, the immature fruits are striped with green and yellow bands. When ripening (usually in winter), they turn bright orange while their stripes fade slightly.
  • Taste profile: The fruit is larger and much juicier than most other kumquats. True to kumquat tradition, it is eaten whole (with the peel). Its thin skin is very sweet and mild, pleasantly contrasting with a tangy and very aromatic pulp. It also contains very few seeds.
  • Growth habit: It is a shrub or small compact tree, upright and practically thornless. In a pot, it rarely exceeds a height of 1.2 to 2 meters (4 to 7 feet), making it ideal for cultivation in limited spaces.

Growing and Care Tips

The 'Centennial' kumquat is one of the most suitable citrus fruits for container growing in northern climates (such as Quebec):

  • Exposure: It requires full sun or very bright light (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to flower and fruit well.
  • Watering: Water generously when the soil surface begins to dry, but ensure the potting mix is perfectly drained. It hates having waterlogged roots.
  • Wintering: Being hardy only down to about -3 °C to -5 °C (zones 8 to 11), it must be brought indoors into a cool and very bright room from autumn to spring if you live in a frost-prone area.
  • Fertilization: Apply a rich, specific citrus fertilizer 3 to 4 times a year during its active growth period (from spring to early autumn
